Abstract
The present study was conducted to evaluate the seasonal variations in the activity of serum enzymes in Bikaneri and Jaisalmeri breeds of the camel. Blood samples were collected from sixty apparently healthy milking camels of Bikaneri and Jaisalmeri breeds (30 each) during summer, rainy and winter season. Serum was separated for the estimation of enzymes i.e. AST, ALT, ALP and LDH by using an automated blood biochemistry analyzer. Serum AST and ALT were higher in summer followed by rainy and winter season while serum LDH was higher in winter followed by rainy and summer season in both Bikaneri and Jaisalmeri breeds of the camel. There was a significant effect (P<0.05) of interaction of breed and season on serum ALP activity while ALT and LDH showed a highly significant (P<0.01) effect. A highly significant (P<0.01) effect of overall season was observed on serum AST, ALT and LDH but ALP showed a non-significant (P>0.05) effect. There was a highly significant (P<0.01) increase in serum ALT and LDH activity in Jaisalmeri camel whereas serum AST and ALP showed a non-significant (P>0.05) effect of the breed. These reference values will helpful in diagnosis of various diseases in camels.
