Abstract
Housing/shelter is the most imperative part of the animal management system. Animals are very much susceptible to heat stress, especially during summer months, therefore instead of providing a simple shed, a temporary modification in the roof may improve the microclimate of the shed. Eighteen female Sahiwal calves of 6-12 months were kept under three different groups i.e. T0 (Control group having asbestos sheet as roof), T1 (which having thatch over the asbestos sheet as a modification) and T2 (which had Agro-net over asbestos sheet) for a period of 3 months. The growth parameter i.e. body weight was recorded on a weekly basis. The ADG, weekly weight gain and monthly weight gain was significantly higher (P<0.05) in T1 (398.66±26.06 g/week, 2.85±0.19 kg/week and 37.03±2.52 kg) as compared to T0 (330.76±19.69 g/week, 2.26±0.14 kg/week and 29.27±1.91 kg) and in between T1 and T2, it was non-significantly lower in T2 (373.55±13.25 g/week, 2.62±0.09 kg/week and 34.00±1.28kg) as compared to T1. It may be concluded that thatch and agro-net over the asbestos sheet showed beneficial effects on the growth of Sahiwal calves in arid regions.
