Abstract
The occurrence of pyogranulomatous rhino-fascial disease caused by Pythium spp in sheep is reported. Four sheep aged 4-5 years from different flocks were reported to have fascial deformity, unilateral swelling of nasal region, bloody nasal discharge, respiratory distress with snoring respiration was brought to Veterinary Clinical Complex of the institute. On examination, nasal cavity showed mucosal ulcers and irregular, firm nodules and necrotic tissue partially obstructing nasal passage. Oral cavity revealed oro-nasal fistula, mucosal ulcers on dental pad and hard palate with severe foul-smelling rancid odour. Microscopically, biopsy tissue from nasal passage revealed pyogranulomatous lesions characterised by necrosis, inflammatory infiltrations and unobvious fungal hyphae. Special staining with Periodic acid Schiff and Grocott hexamine (methenamine) silver stain revealed faintly stained hyphae with bulbous structures. Culture of biopsy tissue showed small radiating growth. Based on the clinical, gross, microscopic findings and cultural characters, the outbreak was diagnosed as rhino-facial granulomatous disease caused by Pythium spp.
