Abstract
An ex-post-facto study was conducted to know the knowledge and awareness level of the livestock farmers in green fodder production by using a pretested interview schedule through a personal interview method. The study involved 90 respondents of Bidar, Kalaburagi and Yadgir Districts of Karnataka for the period of July to November 2022. The study reported that the majority of the farmers had a low level of awareness of green fodder production and with regards to practices followed in cultivation of different fodder varieties; farmers had a high level of knowledge in cultivation of non-leguminous (62.28%) fodder varieties followed by rainfed (36.47%) and leguminous fodder varieties (21.95%). Further, upon overall analysis, it was found that farmers had a high level of knowledge about non-leguminous fodder cultivation (73.33%) followed by leguminous (64.44%) and rainfed (50.00%), respectively. Further, farmers had a high level of knowledge in feeding of green fodder to the animals. The study concluded that there is a need to educate the farmers about different green fodder varieties available and their cultivation practices through different extension approaches for improved dairy production in the study area.
