Abstract
Three adult bovines i.e.2 cattle (one Gir bull and one Holstein Friesian crossbred Cow) and one Nili Ravi Buffalo bull were presented with the history of bilateral blindness. Ophthalmic and ocular ultrasonographic examination diagnosed the condition to be bilateral cataract with no retinal detachment. All the bovines were operated for unilateral extracapsular cataract extraction under general anaesthesia or local nerve block. Only, the Holstein Friesian crossbred cow restored the visual outcome. Postoperative complications of uveitis, corneal oedema and vitreous reactions were observed in the other two bovine. The study concludes that the extracapsular cataract extraction technique can be used for cataract management in bovines but is accompanied by complications and has a guarded prognosis.
