Abstract

This study had been undertaken to record the sequential events of the structural changes in the development of bulbourethral glands. For this 30 male goat foetii ranging from 0 day to full term, divided into five groups, consisted of 6 animals in each were used. At 55 days of gestation, just above the developing urethral muscle, two compact mass of cells were observed, referred as primordia of bulbourethral gland. With the advancement in the age of gestation, the number of solid ducts increased in the gland. At the same time luminization process started in some of the ducts at 59 days of gestation. Diameter of ducts increased with increase in gestation period. They were lined by simple to stratified cuboidal epithelium. The thickness of capsule, trabeculae and diameter of ducts increased from group III to V, but the height of epithelium decreased with increase in gestation period. At the end of gestation ducts were surrounded by both mucous as well as serous secretory end pieces, but predominantly mucous secretory end pieces were seen. Some secretory end pieces showed both serous and mucous secretory cells. The cytoplasm of the epithelial cells of solid ducts showed mild to intense PAS reaction in group II and V, respectively and mild to intense AMPS reaction in group II and III. Intense positive Feulgen’s reaction, lipid reaction and alkaline and acid phosphatase reactions were noticed in nuclei of epithelial cells, basement membrane, capsule and blood vessels of gland, respectively.
