Abstract
The reports are that freezing induced oxidative stress has a detrimental effect on post-thaw sperm quality. Moreover, the importance of Red Sindhi breed bull- a milch type cow bull, the study was designed to evaluate the effect of tBHQ (tert-butyl hydroquinone) on semen quality. The present study was conducted on four Red Sindhi bulls. Semen samples having more than 500 million sperm per millilitre, progressive motility of more than 70% and abnormality less than 15% were selected for the further in-vitro study of tert-butyl hydroquinone on semen quality in incremental doses of tBHQ i.e. 0 µM, 2.5 µM, 5 µM and 7.5 µM. Progressive motility, viability, acrosomal and plasma membrane integrity were found significantly (P<0.05) higher and morphological abnormality was found significantly (P<0.05) lower at 5 µM concentration of tBHQ added in EYTG extender at post-thaw stages. The effect of tBHQ on level of MDA was found significantly (P<0.05) lower at 5 µM concentration of tBHQ added in EYTG extender at post-thaw stages whereas, catalase didn’t show any significant differences over variation in concentration at pre-freeze and post stages.
