Abstract
The present study was conducted on 109 randomly selected dairy units comprising 251 Indigenous (Desi), 90 Holstein Friesian crossbred (HFX), and 107 Jersey crossbred (JX) cows of the Shahabad region (Bihar). The average lactation milk yield of the HFX and JX was more than double that of the desi cows. Lactation length (days) of Desi, HFX, and JX cows were obtained as 317.82±1.50, 345.36±1.29 and 338.64 ±1.62, respectively. HFX showed a significantly higher peak yield (6.3 kg) than the Desi cow. Although JX showed non-significantly higher peak yield (4.82 kg) than Desi cow. Least squares means of DAPY in Desi, HFX and JX cows were found to be 57.06±0.58, 48.20±0.50 and 51.75±0.63 days, respectively. Genetic factors and lactation order had a significant (P<0.01) role on Days attained Peak yield (DAPY). HFX had significantly lower DAPY than JX and Desi Cow. The least squares mean of calving interval (CI, days) were obtained in Desi, HFX and JX as 456.97±1.27, 420.07±1.09 and 425.89±1.38 days respectively. HF crossbreds and JX cows had significantly (P<0.01) 36.90 days and 31.08 days lower average CI than Desi cows. HF crossbreds and JX cows had significantly (P<0.05) 44.21 and 50.50 days shorter dry periods than Desi, cows. JX cows obtained a significantly shorter dry period (11.29 days) than HFX cows.
